Characters

Dr. Elwin Ransom - The protagonist of the novel. He is a professor of philology from the Universit
y of Cambridge, and gifted in his language skills. Ransom befriends many hrossa, sorns, and even Oyarssa during his stay in Malacandra.

Dr. Weston - A physicist with a arrogant and greedy set of beliefs. He occasionally boasts about his achievements in science and mocks the classics with views of imperialism. Unlike Ransom, he does not see the Malacandrians as beings that are worthy of friendship, but rather the weaker creatures under mankind.

Dick Devine - An accomplice of Weston. He solely travels to Malacandria for its gold, which the Malacandrians called "sun's blood". He does not seek an opportunity to lead mankind a step towards achievement and power, but to feed his greed and pleasure with wealth.

Hrossa (hross) - Giant, otter-like species that dwell in the valleys of Malacandra. They are known for their fishing, literature, and poetry.

Séroni (sorn) - Tall and thin white figures that are known for their vast intelligence. The hrossa say they are unable to swim in a mocking fashion, but when Ransom asked the hrossa difficult questions they would suggest him to ask the séroni instead. The séroni are eager to gain knowledge and take part in designing machinery for the pfifltriggi.

Pfifltriggi (pfifltrigg) - Short, frog-like species that live in Meldilorn. They specialize in building, though they get their ideas mainly from the séroni.

Eldila (eldil) - Species that are above the other three, but below Oyarsa. They are invisible to the eye unless they want to be seen, or if looked at in a different angle. They act as messengers of Oyarsa, and one specifically asks Ransom to meet with their deity.

Hyoi -  The first hrossa that becomes Ransom's friend. He introduces then teaches Ransom the Solar language and the hrossa culture, as well as the beings that dwell on Malacandra. Hyoi is later murdered by Weston and Devine during a hunt.

Augray - A sorn Ransom encounters during his journey to Oyarsa. He asks many questions regarding the facts about Earth,  then he carries him to Meldilorn to meet Oyarsa.

Kanakaberaka - The first pfifltrigg Ransom meets for a very short period of time. He carves Ransom's image onto a stone in Meldilorn.

Oyarsa - The greatest eldil in Malacandra. He is immortal and lives as the ruler. He sends for Ransom to ask him many questions about Earth and his purpose for coming to his planet.
