Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland. His inspiration for his future career began at an early age, with a little help from his brother Warren. Even after his mother's death, when he was only 10 years old, Lewis enjoyed a life of fantasy in an imaginary world called Boxen with Warren, expanding his creativity. The joy did not last long as the world war soon erupted in Europe. Lewis served in the British Army in the first world war, then was sent back due to an injury from a shrapnel. He lived as a surrogate son of Janie Moore after the war during his college years. Lewis graduated from Oxford University, majoring in literature and classic philosophy. He also achieved a fellowship teaching position in Magdalen College in 1925. Lewis published his very first sci-fi novel, Out of the Silent Planet, before his most famous series called The Chronicles of Narnia. In 1954, Lewis joined the faculty of Cambridge University as a literature professor, and in 1956 he married Joy Gresham, who was an American English teacher. Gresham died of cancer in 1960, which he expressed his grieving in his novel A Grief Observed. In 1963, Lewis resigned from his Cambridge position after experiencing heart trouble, and died on November 22, 1963 in Headington, Oxford.
